I finally have gotten around to writing this howto because of so many questions I have seen regarding setting up the Motorola V710 as a bluetooth modem under OS X. These instructions assume you understand a little bit about your computer and that you are running OS X Panther. The same should work fine with Jaguar, but since I don't have a Mac running Jaguar handy, I can't post the pics. Anyone who wants to post a howto with Jaguar but doesn't have the web facilities, please feel free to contact me and I can host it.
You must have:
1) Panther (I repeat)
2) A Bluetooth module or adapter installed and enabled
3) Your V710 handy
Go to System Preferences and click on Bluetooth:

Although it may work otherwise, make sure your settings look like:

Go to Devices and click on Set Up New Device:

Put your phone in "discoverable" mode by going to Menu -> Settings -> Connection (all the way at the bottom) -> Bluetooth Link -> Setup -> Find Me
Click on Continue (on the Bluetooth Setup Assistant):

Click on Mobile Phone and then Continue:

Once it sees the phone, click on Continue:

Pair the phone with the computer by accepting the pairing settings on the phone and entering the PIN:

Once this has taken place, you should end up with a screen like:

Click on Continue. Fill in the following screen with:

Where password is vzw. The modem script should be set to SprintPCS and click continue.
You are almost done when you see (click on Quit):

Now, you can go to Internet Connect under Applications:

Click Connect and you should have things working. If you do not see Calling and then Packet Data on the phone, then either it is not connecting to the phone properly or something else is set wrong. Also, under Network (in System Preferences) -> Show Bluetooth, click on PPP Options:

Make sure Use TCP Header Compression is unchecked:

If all of this doesn't work, try to describe the problem you are having and double check that all of the above was followed.

What effective speed should I see with this? And I'm curious why you've chosed the Sprint modem file. The logic there?
I'm using it and it's working, just curious.

Thank you. I thought i was going to have to call on the cyber gods and hack kings to devise a digital software battle plan with which to storm verizons virtual castle, in order to use my v710 as a modem. But your how to worked like a charm and no digital lives were lost, I thank you and their mothers thank you.

I've got this working quite well, however I get disconnected quite often if I'm sending data that's any bigger than say 60k... Like an email attachment, FTPing, or updating via CVS. Anyone else have this problem? And more importatnly, anyone have a fix?
Thanks!

I see the calling window on my phone when I try to dial, but it doesn't connect maybe it's because of my location but I don't know.

Chris - you need to give more information. You also might want to do a had-reset of the phone and try pairing it again. I have seen what you are talking about happen before, but it was always in the context of the phone acting weird or not being in an area where Verizon supports data services - something you definitely want to verify before going further.

Ok, here goes, I've followed your instructions to the T so to say. When I start up Internet Connect, I know my phone gets the signal to dial because it lights up, beeps, and then a little window on the screen opens up and it says "Calling..." with a little animation. It keeps saying "Calling..." on my phone and eventually Internet Connect disconnects and gives me the error "There was no response" or something. I don't have the National Access Plan nor do I have the Broadband Access plan, I'm do have the mobile web deal on my plan so I can browse with my phone. I can't get online with the phone's browser when I'm at the my house. Now that I read that last line over... I think I just answered my problem haha damn the man, but hey I'll try it out unless you ppl think it's something else. Thanks in advance.

James,
I know there are specific scripts out there for Verizon, but I have always used the SprintPCS Vision modem scripts. The authentication error comes from not entering the proper username and/or password for Verizon/Sprint.
Verizon should look like:
username: yourphonenumber@vzw3g.com

I have tried my v710 as a USB moden and as a BT modem and it gives me the same results:
It dials the ISP however it seems to fall in an infinite loop:

04-08-2005 03:10:51.066 - 115200,8,N,1, ctsfl=0, rtsctl=1
And it starts again to initialize the modem After a while the ISP just hangs the connection.
I read somewhere that there are VZ scripts?
What else can i do?

What do I use for CID for verizon, or how do I find it?

Kevin,
There is no CID for Verizon. That is a GSM "thing" and is not needed for CDMA/EV-DO connections - at least right now. Also, the password needed - as stated clearly in the howto - is "vzw".

It took two days dealing with all the other variables like setting up an account with Earthlink that I now know I didn't need, and hours on the phone with Verizon, who finally told me "Verizon does not support Macintosh," and then using the info on this page i DID get it to work! Whoo Hoo! :)
I had to go through things a few times to make sure I was using a new "location" rather than modifying one with old info in it. (The location is selected under the Apple menu icon and determines which type of connection - bluetooth, airport, cable, etc. you want to use to connect with), I also forgot to do the last step one time, making sure the TCP header compression was turned off, but this this really does work. You end up using Verizon's data transfer thing rather than having to dial up to a different ISP, which is good because it is faster (hopefully data transfer charges don'tend up on the Verizon bill). I did this using Tiger, and the pictures are a bit different, but it works.
One thing to note is that I couldn't send messages using Mail for OS X because Verizon disallowed my sender address. To send mail you need a web browser mail account like yahoo or hot mail, and all your contacts will have to know which of your email addresses to use.
I am extremely grateful to the guy who posted this page. Without it I would never have gotten my v710 to connect my ibook to the rest of the world while camping in the Utah desert, which I have been looking forward to all year. A heartfelt thanks :)

Does anybody know if there are any extra costs (other than minutes) in using the Verizon #777 vs a normal dial-up number for Earthlink? Is the speed better or something or will they both be 14.4.

ok, i followed all the directions here, after trying it myself, i'm using an e815, i'm having no luck at all, when i first set it up, all the option for high speed or dialup show up, but ultimately disappear and just go to use my phone as a modem. i do that, and i've tried many different modem scripts, but the main problem is my bluetooth never tries to connect, the light on my adapter flashes, but never turns steady. also i have enable dialup on the phone itself. also the phone is paired with the computer, but shows no indication at all when i am trying to connect as a modem (isync works tho!)

just did this on my roommate's computer. works perfectly. it's a little slow but that's because 1xRTT is dial up speed. can't wait for broadband service to be supported as well.
as for the two previous posts, the reason you're having trouble with the E815 is because the wireless modem is not a supported bluetooth profile on the phone. at least over the EV-DO (broadband) network. I know VZW disabled that feature. you might want to try turning off the EV-DO and connecting over the 1xRTT but i'm not sure if that would work. i don't have the phone and it might just be disabled.

Incredible!! I must have gone two or three rounds with people at Apple, Verizon, and even the Treo folks (originally looking at a Treo 650). All of them told me that I could not use a bluetooth cell phone for dialup. This flew in the face of what I was reading online. Eventually I opted for the much less expensive E815 as it was at least listed on iSync's compatible device list for calendar and contacts.
A couple weeks ago I was having syncing issues and sent Apple some feedback. Whilst poking around my system profiler to get my bluetooth version I discovered that one of the supported services on my E815 was "Dial-Up Networking Gateway." ...hope springs eternal!
Just for kicks today I went hunting again for information on using this as a modem. Let's hear it first for the creator(s) of this page, and secondly for google for finding this page.
I just followed the directions on this page with my E815 and my 15" PowerBook running Tiger (10.4.3) and I'll be damned if it didn't dial my ISP first time and connect!
Huge thanks to the wonderful documentation!!

FYI, got a e815 over the weekend, replacing my V710. Have used with my Powerbook quite sometime running Tiger. Went through the setup procedure above with the e815. No luck. Called Verizon. They said that the packet data feature is turned off in the e815, "so sorry too bad." Did subsequent Internet searching. I found that if you enter "##DIALUP" on the phone, it enables data. Problem solved! It works!

Every time I start connect i get back "authentication failed", if i get that far. the only other thing im wondering about is should these instructions apply to a motorola V3 razr too? i have one of those, the new ones for verizon, and bluetooth works fine on it, it set up perfectly.

Does this work on Tiger? I know it says Panther, but I don't know if that was a minimum requirement or an absolute requirement. Anyway, I'm following the steps and it's not accepting the pin code. Where did that pin come from anyway? Is it from the phone or the Mac? Is there another pin to use with Tiger?

Disregard my comment from January 10th (I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that). I can use my V710 to connect to the Internet without a problem. In the US, that is. In Canada, I'm getting an authentication error. My guess is that Verizon has partnered with someone else in Canada (I'm on a voice plan that includes Canada), and they either don't support the data network or there is a different username/password. Anyone know of a username/password that will work in Canada?

Everytime I go through the same process it dials as usual (it does seem to take a little longer than my other phones connecting), it seems to go through all the same messages in connecting, "establishing connection", but then I see that when it gets to the "Authentication User" it automatically "disconnects" and then it says "Authentication failed" in the Internet Connect message box. Any thoughts you have on this would be greatly appreciated.

Steve!! Out of all the 710 sites that say "do this","don't do that" (signs), your's works. That Sprint Modem setting... brilliant.
I've tried every other script I could find, including Ross Barkman's (which we shouldn't belittle, as most scripts do work). Now to find one that works with USB so I can get 10-15k more out of this thing. Anywho... Thanks for posting this.

Does anyone know if this works with a Razor phone?
